Brangwyn was one of a number of artists commissioned by the Ministry of Information to design lithographs for a series of prints entitled ‘The Great War: Efforts and Ideals’. This print comes from the series ‘Making Sailors’, depicting a young boy yearning to join the Navy. Other topics from the series included: Building Ships, Making Guns, Transport by Sea and Women’s Work. From the Great War: Britain’s Efforts and Ideals series of 6 black and white lithographs which were presented to the major museums of all allied Countries
