Joos de Momper II painted many landscapes, often showing imaginary scenes. In this painting the landscape is peopled with figures carrying reeds, skating and playing in the snow. He uses a high viewpoint and a conventional colour scheme in his work; browns are used in the foreground, leading back through greens and blues. The simplicity and graphic quality of this work shows the influence of the Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel I, who also painted winter scenes.
