Thomas Heeremans specialised in scenes featuring the Dutch landscape and canals. In this winter scene he has included many aspects of everyday life, showing people at work and play on the ice. The town shown on the left of this painting is thought to be of his own invention. A Little Ice Age gripped Northern Europe in the 17th century and paintings of wintry scenes became very popular.
