The scene is of women and children awaiting the return of fishermen from sea. This type of idealised social subject had been popular amongst Post Impressionist painters around 1900. Augustus John was particularly good at capturing a sense of a spontaneous moment even when, as in this work, he would actually have combined individual sketches to create a composition. This study may have been a preliminary drawing for a large scale painting or mural, John often took on commissions for these to decorate houses.
