John Bellany was influenced by the fishing villages in Scotland where he grew up in the 1940s and 1950s. His work is often deeply autobiographical and took inspiration from the culture, heritage and religion of his community. In this triptych Celtic Feast, he mixes symbols from Celtic mythology and Calvinism. The artist depicted himself in this painting wearing a puffin mask.
