Jack Hulme was the local barber in Fryston, a mining village near Pontefract in West Yorkshire. He began photographing as a teenager in the 1920s and documented life in Fryston for 70 years. However, his work wasn’t discovered until 1987. Hulme photographed Fryston from his personal perspective and used his unique position to create an in-depth, sensitive and intuitive portrait of village life.
