This was the view from Vanessa Bell’s first floor studio at Charleston in Sussex, where she lived with the artist Duncan Grant. She often painted her surroundings at Charleston and commented upon ‘the extraordinary peace and beauty of the place’.
Bell was a member of the Bloomsbury Group, an association of artists, critics and writers who reacted against everything Victorian. They were strongly influenced by the Post-Impressionists in their use of colour and light and have been credited with introducing Modern Art to Britain.
