Material and Medium: oil on canvas
Dimensions: Support: 357 x 380 x 20mm
Department: Visual Art

Ruth Hollingsworth trained at the Slade between 1901 and 1905 and was personally tutored by William Nicholson. His still life painting was very influential on her work and arguably could be seen in the arrangement of objects in the foreground of this painting. The object of the maids’ attention seems to be the pair of ceramic penguins, perhaps this is intended to suggest she is thinking about love. Or, maybe these exotic birds and the Japanese print on the wall are meant to suggest that she is daydreaming about travel to far away lands.
