This watercolour of the Scottish highlands shows minelayer ships on the horizon off the Isle of Skye. Minelayers planted remotely controlled mines for the coastal defences that would then be detonated by shore control when a ship was within the mine's range. Muirhead Bone was an Official War Artist during both the First and Second World War. He produced several hundred drawings of the Western Front and Naval activity, of troops and ruins of towns and cities.
