In this painting Bone has recorded the minelayers returning from deploying defensive naval mines to prevent German U-boats and ships closing in on the British coast. Many mines were placed around the English Channel and the Denmark straits. During the First and Second World War, Muirhead Bone worked as an Official War Artist, documenting the action on the Western Front and British Naval activity.
