This painting is one of a pair, it was painted shortly after James Collinson left the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood. Collinson was a devout Christian and believed the brotherhood were disrespecting the Christian religion. At this time he began painting genre paintings and scenes from everyday life, such as this one. He has used bright, bold colours and has meticulously painted the detailed still life in the background. Collinson re-titled both of these paintings, this painting was originally called ‘For Sale’.
