Holman Hunt often travelled to Israel and Egypt, known as the Holy Land, where he would have sketched this scene. He was convinced that he would capture greater religious intensity in his works by studying the Biblical landscape. He employed Ruskin's ideals of a truthful backdrop and symbolic association in order to give moving accounts of historical events.
He was particularly struck by the landscape's colours and the harsh, contrasting light conditions. He found sketching in watercolour, rather than drawing, the best way to record it.
