William Gillies painted numerous still life works many of which feature flowers. The artist used loose brushwork for all components of this image including the flat background and the subtle suggestions of details in the blooms and in the decorative vase. Gillies was influenced by early twentieth century French artists such as Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard who also made vibrant still life paintings using bright tones and hues.
