Alan Davie would lay his canvas on the floor and would work in a spontaneous manner with no plan of what he wanted to produce. He allowed himself to paint freely to fulfil his impulse to create, producing mysterious forms and symbols until he decided the painting was complete. He was heavily influenced by ancient art, spiritualism, Zen Buddhism and shamanism which can be seen in the forms found in his work, as well as the trance like state he painted in.
Davie’s practice was underpinned by his idea that “Painting is a continuous process which has no beginning or end. There never really is a point in time when painting is NOT.”
