This portrait depicts the poet Edith Sitwell who was a member of the Bloomsbury Group along with Roger Fry. She was painted in Fry’s London studio in Fitzroy Street seated in front of an Omega screen.
Sitwell recalled that during the sitting she and Fry caused merriment among local children as they crossed the street for lunch, her in a long evening dress and Fry in a large sombrero.
Fry founded the Omega Workshops in 1913. They were inspired by Post-Impressionism and sought to reinvigorate decorative art by introducing a new sense of colour and design.
