This portrait of two sisters with the family dog suggests their loyalty to one another. It is likely that their father commissioned this portrait as they are depicted in luxurious dress against a formal landscape which hints at patriarchal ownership, wealth and success. John Vanderbank was an English portrait painter and book illustrator who studied under Godfrey Kneller. He was a very gifted painter and had a very good reputation during the reign of King George I.
