John Bratby often used members of his family in his work and the title of this drawing suggests the sitters could be relatives of his. Perhaps Bratby is the boy himself, standing behind the chair of his ancestors in which his mother sits? This pencil drawing shows a more delicate style than Bratby’s typical thickly painted oils. He must also have taken a personal interest in the framing of this work, as the note to the framer suggests: ‘when framing do not encroach’.
