The Air Transport Auxiliary carried out vital work moving aircraft around Britain to where it was needed to be to be repaired or made ready for war. This work shows men and women from the Air Transport Auxiliary fitting parachutes. In 1940 Cole requested work as a war artist but was turned down. He persisted and two years later he was appointed Official War Artist. Cole was sent to Malta, Greece and the Far East, but also created work exploring life on the Home Front.
