Frank Dobson pioneered the 20th century revival of direct carving in sculpture, when no maquette or model is made in advance. He is most known for his sculptures of simplified and stylised figures and for portraits. In this pastel study, we can see that Dobson also worked from life. This sketch shows how the artist studied his source material carefully and used drawing as a way of seeing and thinking about three dimensional form.
