Barend Cornelis Koekkoek was one of the most celebrated Dutch landscape artists of the 19th century and perhaps the most Romantic. This painting shows a mountainous landscape dominated by the dark sky of an incoming storm. Koekkoek painted many panoramic views in the Rhine Valley and the steep rock in the background may be the Lorelei. You can see fishermen and villages preparing for the storm by securing their boats and herding their cattle to safety.
