The subject of African Prison was based on accounts of an uprising at a prison in Kenya in 1959. Members of the Mau Mau revolt, who were rebelling against British Colonial Rule, were attacked by prison guards after refusing to co-operate with orders. Eleven were clubbed to death while the remaining seventy-seven sustained severe injuries. De Francia travelled widely during the 1950s, particularly in North Africa, and was acutely aware of the widespread injustice inflicted upon small communities at the hands of colonial powers.
