This painting is also known by the title 'The Knife Forger'. It shows two men in a blacksmith's workshop handforging a blade. The metal is heated in the fire and then banged into shape with hammers. This process was later mechanised with the development of large tilt hammers which were powered by water and subsequently by steam.
