Joseph Clark was an English painter who specialised in domestic genre subjects, expressing a Victorian concern for social conscience and the praise of family life. This painting is a scene offered to the viewer through the eyes of the labourer reflected in the mirror in the centre. The composition is centred on his wife and cat waiting quietly for his return. Though probably idealised, the painter provided us with a detailed depiction of a late 19th century English rural house.
