This painting shows a group of peasants playing a game of shuttlecock in a Flemish village. This game appears to be an early version of golf and is related to the sport of colf which is seen in many Dutch and Flemish landscape paintings. Everyday life was a very popular subject matter for Flemish artists and David Teniers II painted many such scenes. This work is probably by a painter who was inspired by Tenier’s style.
