John Linnell’s passion was painting landscapes. He spent the early part of his career painting scenes of rural peasant life but later had to paint portraits to earn a living. In the 1850s he became financially stable enough to paint what he liked. Linnell’s ambition was to paint biblical scenes and he believed landscape painting could have religious significance. Linnell thought the beauty of nature was evidence of God’s presence and as such, many of his landscapes have religious undertones.
