George Constantine's painting shows a ploughman and two horses in a field on Hangram Lane in the rural Mayfields area of Sheffield, to the west of the city. The man has stopped to talk to a girl wearing a red bonnet sitting on the stone wall which gives this landscape view a narrative interest. The long shadows across the field create a tranquil atmosphere of late afternoon.
