This painting looks north west to the town centre from Psalter Lane. In the foreground is Brincliffe Edge, a sandstone quarry that supplied building stone and grindstones for the cutlery industry.
This view of Sheffield was painted around 1850, when Sheffield was still a small manufacturing town surrounded by countryside. The cutlery industry comprised hundreds of outworkers in cottages and workshops in the town centre and on the outskirts.
