This painting is one of a pair, it was painted shortly after James Collinson left the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood. Collinson was a devout Christian and believed the brotherhood were disrespecting the Christian religion. The pair of paintings were first shown at the Royal Academy in 1857 and became extremely popular, leading Collinson to paint a duplicate pair. Collinson re-titled both of these paintings, this painting was originally called ‘To Let’.
