Albert Joseph Moore was an artist who specialised in Classically-inspired paintings of female figures in diaphanous draperies. This painting, which may have been a study due to its unfinished appearance, forms part of a pair titled "Battledore and Shuttlecock." Battledore and shuttlecock was a game similar to badminton which was invented in Greece 2,000 years ago, and spread throughout Europe and Asia. The game has been a popular subject for artwork and has been depicted in numerous images throughout the centuries.
