This scene of Venice depicts one of the many bridges over the canals. Venice has long been a popular subject for many artists from Canaletto to Turner, lured by the beautiful architecture and atmospheric light. James Holland was generally a watercolour painter but did occasionally paint in oil. He was also highly skilled at architectural drawings, as demonstrated in this colourful view of Venice glittering in the sun. Holland’s Venice paintings are considered his best and are highly sought after.
