George Morland was a popular 18th century British painter specialising in rural scenes. Depicting the weather was a frequent theme of Morland’s landscapes and in this painting, he has created a stormy sky illuminating the rough countryside landscape. From early in his career he copied the Dutch masters, which has a lasting influence on his landscapes. Morland was a prolific artist, producing thousands of drawings and paintings during his lifetime. His work was sought after and many of his paintings were turned into mezzotints
