H W B Davis perfectly captures the relaxed mood of this herd of cattle on a hot summer’s afternoon. Some are cooling themselves in the stream while others playfully jostle with each other, the golden sunshine warming their backs. Davis’ paintings were often inspired by his surroundings and animals frequently featured in them. The detailed foreground and meticulously painted cattle show the lasting influence the Pre-Raphaelite movement had on his work.
