This painting was made by the artist John Poole, who was born in Birmingham around 1803 but lived and worked in Sheffield from 1826 onwards. This picture shows a gentle country scene off Machon Bank in the Nether Edge area in south Sheffield. Poole went on to be a founder member and president of the Sheffield Society of Artists, and his delicate landscapes sold quickly.
