Philips Wouwermans painted a large number of hunting scenes throughout his career.
He specialised in small-scale landscapes which always included horses. This example
shows a stag on the left hand side of the canvas frantically trying to escape, pursued
by a hunter on horseback. The white horse became Wouwermans’ trademark. He was one of the most successful Dutch painters of horses.
