Mark Gheeraerts the Elder and his son Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger were 16th century Dutch painters associated with the court of England. This is a portrait of George Carey, 2nd Lord Hundson, whose father was cousin to Queen Elizabeth I of England. The rendering of the Lord’s features is precise, using shadows to create a life-like impression quite typical of Dutch style and very different from the usual Elizabethan aesthetics. The coat of arms on the top left-hand corner features the crest of the Carey family.
