David Wilkie was a successful Scottish artist who specialised in genre paintings. At first glance, this portrait of a Scottish professor is quite stern. The man is dressed in black clothes and standing. His hand lying on an open book provides a clue as to his profession, while the background provides little additional information. However, this serious setting is contrasted by the liveliness of the man’s face, his rosy cheeks and good-natured smile revealing a sense of warmth and personality.
