The name of the man in this formal portrait is unknown. The coat of arms and inscription were revealed during conservation work on the painting and relate to a family by the name of Fust. It is likely however that these elements were added after the portrait was painted in around 1584. Particular elements in the painting, such as the large ruff, would have indicated the wealth and status of the sitter and his family.
