George Morland was a popular 18th century British painter who specialised in rural scenes, often including domestic animals. This depiction of a sow and its two piglets portrays a serene pastoral atmosphere. Morland treated paintings of animals in the manner of portraits, and completed many notable studies of cattle heads.
