Graves Gift, 1929. Museums Sheffield
A Road Near Sheffield
Artist: Thomas Creswick R.A. , British, 1811 - 1869
Material and Medium: oil on canvas
Dimensions: Sight size: 210 x 355mm Overall: 332 x 477 x 70mm
Department: Visual Art
Accession Number: VIS.102
This painting is thought to show Manchester Road with the Bell Hagg Inn overlooking the Rivelin Valley off to the left of the picture. Thomas Creswick’s pastoral view of the outskirts of Sheffield is little changed today. The dirt road and focus on the natural landscape gives little sense of the innovative and busy industrial city just out of view.
