The original sketch for this work was made near Foolow in the Hope Valley. Harry Allen often painted the landscape around Sheffield which was his home city. He made sketches outside and would then reinterpret them into a more formal design back in his studio. Allen was fascinated by the walls in Derbyshire: ‘…the thousands of miles of limestone walls undulating over valleys and hills have a pictorial significance… to the artist in search of line and colour it is most intriguing.’
