Peter de Wint, most well-known for his landscape paintings, was close friend of the historical painter William Hilton. De Wint married Hilton’s sister, Harriet, and this is a portrait of William and Harriet's father. It belongs in a series of portraits of relatives, including the artist’s mother and wife. Here, the head of the family is portrayed with an attention to detail which reminds us of the artist’s Dutch origins. The contrast between the black background and lighter skin colour tones conveys a true-to-life elderly dignity.
