Walter Sickert is best known for his city scenes and nudes in sombre interiors. He spent part of his childhood in Dieppe and often returned there as he enjoyed the liberal, cosmopolitan atmosphere. Although this work dates from just before the turn of the century, it typifies the embracing of colour and light evident during the early twentieth century.
Sickert attended the Slade School of Art before becoming studio assistant to James Whistler. He moved back to Dieppe in 1898 and spent the next seven years in France, where he regularly met with his mentor Edgar Degas.
