This is a selection of stainless steel scalpel blades manufactured in Sheffield by Swann-Morton, in the 1970s.
Scalpels are extremely sharp blades used during surgical procedures to cut through human tissue. These blades are attached to a handle and each blade is only used once before disposal. Some modern scalpels have retractable blades or come with a blade removing device, so the blade can be disposed of without touching.
In recent years Swann-Morton has expanded its sites in Hillsborough with the addition of two new works, Cobb Works in 2006 and Cygnet Works in 2008. It is one of the city’s most successful manufacturing firms and helps maintain Sheffield’s reputation as a large scale manufacturer of stainless steel products.
