These are miniature scissors mounted on card. The larger pair measures 24mm in length, while the smaller ones are only 9mm long. Sheffield firms prided themselves on their craftsmanship and several companies made novelty and exhibition pieces both large and small with intricate decoration. These kinds of objects were designed to show off the skills of the craftsmen and were often exhibited at company showrooms or manufacturing fairs such as the Great Exhibition of 1851. They were also presented to royalty. When the Sheffield manufacturers Joseph Rodgers & Sons took some miniature scissors to show George IV, the scissors were dropped on the plush carpet and were apparently so small they were never found!
