Department: Decorative Art
Accession Number: L85.22
The decoration on the shield includes panels of Arabic writing. These are often quotations from the Qur’an, the holy book of Islam, or prayers to the prophet Muhammed and the names of famous kings or leaders. While arms and armour provided physical protection, the decoration also offered spiritual support and was meant to inspire bravery in the owner.
