This specimen is part of a folio of pressed seaweeds collated by Margaret Gatty and her daughter, Horatia. Almost all of the contents of the folio were collected between 1850 to 1864. Although there is no date provided with the specimen, Gatty is known to have been in correspondance with Dr David Landsborough of Saltcoats between 1850 and 1854. She is also known to have visited nearby Cumbrae in 1852 and 1853.
