Although Margaret Gatty spent a lot of her time 'seaweedising' around the coast of Britain, most of her specimens donated to Sheffield museums were given to her by friends, family and correspondants. Unfortunately, for the most part, no record was kept of who collected the specimens, although we can be sure that any foreign material in the collection was certainly not collected by Margaret, as she never left the UK. This specimen, which is one of the earliest from her collection, was collected in Withernsea in Yorkshire in 1858, which was quite early on in Margaret Gatty's seaweedising career; she only became interested in the subject in 1852. The date, plus its proximity to Sheffield, makes it possible that this specimen is one collected by Margaret herself. Sadly, it is almost impossible to be certain.
