Blue john
Donor: James William Puttrell , 1869 - 1939
Department: Earth Sciences
Accession Number: U1059
This carved specimen is part of an important collection of blue john bequeathed to the museum in 1939. Sadly, just one year later, during the Sheffield Blitz in December 1940, much of this collection was destroyed when the museum took a direct hit. The shockwave from the blast travelled up the museum corridor and the fragile blue john exploded under the pressure. The curator repaired some of the damage to the specimens, but most still bear witness to the bomb's destruction.
