This specimen of Kakapo was collected by Edward Wake, the son of the Sheffield solicitor, Bernard Wake, during a trip to New Zealand at the end of the 19th century. The Kakapo is now critically endangered with fewer than 130 individuals left in the wild. At the time this specimen was collected, it wasn't known that the species was so close to the brink of extinction.
