This specimen is part of a folio of pressed seaweeds collated by Margaret Gatty and her daughter, Horatia. Most of the contents of the folio were collected between 1850 to 1864. On the Gatty's winter trip to the Isle of Wight between 1856 and 1857, when this specimen was collected, Margaret Gatty wrote her only published scientific paper. It may have been on this trip that Margaret decided to write her book, British Seaweeds.
